ABSTRACT

Sago , an endemic plant of Indonesia, is potential for bio-ethanol basematerial. Bioethanol can be producted from sago core, starch as well as fiber by utilizing certainenzymes. This research was conducted to determine the effectivenees of alpha amylase and gluco-amylase enzymes for bio-ethanol production. The process employed in this research include delignification using alpha amylase enzyme, saccharification using gluco amylase enzyme, and 3-day fermentation at temperature 28 C the process concluded with distillation at 78-100 C.
Laboratory results showed that producing ethanol from sago strach with a combination of 0.18mL/liter alpha amylase and 0.48 ml/liter gluco amylase gives the highest percentage of bio-ethanol, namely 65%. The combination of 0.13 mL/liter alpha amylase, 0.11 mL/liter gluco amylase and 0.33g/liter yeast on sago core only produces 44.84% ethanol using the same combination on sago fiber gives as low as 8.26% ethanol. At the small scale, production using strach, core and fiber gives 24%, 11% and 4% ethanol respectively.
