Abstract

Indonesia is highly dependent on fossil fuels to fulfil its energy needs. However, fossil resources are not renewable and its availability is irrevocably decreasing. This has stimulated the development of alternative renewable resources to substitute fossil fuels, for example bioethanol. Lignocellulosic biomass is a prime candidate because it is relatively cheap and is available enormously from crops and plants. Prior to the production of bioethanol, the lignocellulosic biomass must go through the pre-treatment process. In this study, waste paper was chosen as the lignocellulosic biomass feedstock, and thermal hydrolysis was used as the selected pre-treatment process. The main objectives of this study were to study and optimize the hydrolysis reaction of waste paper using high pressure and temperature of water as the hydrolysis medium. Reaction conditions were varied by changing the reaction temperature (131–196°C), time (0-3 hour) and initial concentration of biomass (3.85- 6.25 %-wt). The hydrolysis products were analysed using Nelson-Somogyi method, and the results confirmed the presence of glucose and other reduction sugars. These results will be used to determine the optimum condition of thermal hydrolysis of waste paper. Subsequently, the sugars obtained from this step will be fermented to produce bioethanol.
